Can I run Babelfish online without installing it?

Yes. The editor sends your script to an isolated hosted Babelfish 5.4.0 runtime and returns its native results. The database does not execute inside your browser.

Which version of Babelfish does this playground use?

The hosted runtime is Babelfish 5.4.0. The version shown here, in page metadata, and in structured data comes from the same runtime configuration.

Does my database persist between runs?

No. Every Run starts from a clean database. Keep schema creation, seed data, and queries together in the editor; all generated state is discarded after the execution.

Which output formats and limits apply?

Native sqlcmd tables, PRINT output, messages, and errors are available. Run executes the entire script, the schema catalogue is bounded, and large output may be truncated. File uploads, package installation, remote network access, and connections to external databases are not supported.

Is this Microsoft SQL Server with complete T-SQL compatibility?

No. The runtime is Babelfish for PostgreSQL and is not affiliated with Microsoft. It implements a substantial T-SQL subset for migration and compatibility work, not the complete SQL Server product. MERGE and many enterprise or administrative features are among the important gaps, so validate advanced application workloads against the upstream compatibility documentation.

About the Babelfish playground

Babelfish for PostgreSQL adds T-SQL syntax, data types, functions, and SQL Server wire-protocol compatibility to PostgreSQL. It supports a substantial subset of Microsoft T-SQL, but it is not Microsoft SQL Server and this playground is not affiliated with Microsoft.

Use this playground to test common migration queries including IDENTITY columns, INSERT statements, TOP queries, joins, grouping, and aggregates. Compatibility is not complete: MERGE and many enterprise, server-administration, security, replication, and SQL Server Agent features are unavailable.

This page sends your script to a hosted, network-isolated Babelfish 5.4.0 runtime. Every Run executes the whole editor contents against a fresh database, then discards its database state and files. It does not run the database in your browser and it never connects to your own database.

Available output: Native sqlcmd tables, PRINT output, messages, and errors. The schema panel shows a bounded catalogue captured after successful execution. Large output may be truncated, and package installation, remote network access, persistent storage, and external database connections are not supported.

How it works

Write

Build a Babelfish script in the editor with syntax highlighting and editor assistance.

Run

Run the complete script against a fresh isolated database sandbox.

Inspect

Review rows, messages, errors, and execution time in the results panel.

Create and query an IDENTITY table with T-SQL

CREATE TABLE dbo.users (
  id INT IDENTITY(1, 1) PRIMARY KEY,
  name NVARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,
  team NVARCHAR(50) NOT NULL
);

INSERT INTO dbo.users (name, team)
VALUES (N'Ada', N'Engineering'), (N'Grace', N'Research');

SELECT TOP (10) id, name, team
FROM dbo.users
ORDER BY id;

Use variables and a local temporary table

DECLARE @minimum_amount DECIMAL(10, 2) = 100.00;

CREATE TABLE #sales (
  sale_id INT PRIMARY KEY,
  customer_name NVARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,
  amount DECIMAL(10, 2) NOT NULL
);

INSERT INTO #sales (sale_id, customer_name, amount)
VALUES (1, N'Ada', 125.50), (2, N'Grace', 89.99), (3, N'Linus', 210.00);

SELECT TOP (2) sale_id, customer_name, amount
FROM #sales
WHERE amount >= @minimum_amount
ORDER BY amount DESC;

Create and execute a stored procedure with GO batches

CREATE TABLE dbo.orders (
  order_id INT IDENTITY(1, 1) PRIMARY KEY,
  total_amount DECIMAL(10, 2) NOT NULL
);
GO

INSERT INTO dbo.orders (total_amount)
VALUES (75.00), (125.50), (210.00);
GO

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.orders_over
  @minimum DECIMAL(10, 2)
AS
BEGIN
  SET NOCOUNT ON;
  SELECT order_id, total_amount
  FROM dbo.orders
  WHERE total_amount >= @minimum
  ORDER BY total_amount DESC;
END;
GO

EXEC dbo.orders_over @minimum = 100.00;
GO
